TRAX Trip – Sunny Corner– using different tracks.

G’day,

I would like to invite you to our next TRAX 4WD Fellowship trip. We are going to Sunny Corner.

Sunny Corner State Forest covers an area of about around 13,000 hectares and borders the following other reserves: Turon State Forest and Winburndale Nature Reserve. The varied landscapes of lush green forests and naked clearings make for very pleasant driving on the many winding forest tracks.

Still need to do a recce. With around 13,000 hectares I am sure to find some new tracks. Thinking of trying the other side of Sunny Corner Rd (east)  and the north end of the forest.

An email will be sent out approx. a week before the trip to people who book in with details of meeting place and time.

You will need a full tank of fuel from Sydney . UHF radio (Channel 13). Recovery equipment (well you should always be prepared). Camera – pictures needed for TRAXION, Food – Morning Tea, Lunch and Afternoon Tea .

Note:- A Visitor’s fee of $10 per vehicle will be charged for non-members attending.  This fee will be counted as the joining fee for visitors signing-up for membership withing 14 days.

See you on the tracks

TRAX trip – Victorian High Country

    Details:
    10th January 2019 to early February 2019
    Victorian High Country trip

    G’day,
Alex Ralston will be leading a trip to the Vic. High Country.

Alex writes… My trip is in the planning stages, but I expect to be starting at Corryong, going through Omeo, Dargo and then further west over about three weeks. If people are interested in joining me for some or all of it then I will make that part of it a TRAX Trip. It would be very helpful if people could tell me now whether they are interested (I am not asking for a commitment at this stage) as this will affect planning a bit (for example, planning to be near an accessible point when you need to join/exit). If you are interested, let me know the dates that suit you. Email trips@trax.org.au

    What type of trip?
Well, I will have a camper trailer, so it will be camper trailer friendly. I do expect that there will be some traveling with the trailer on tracks (I will not be keeping only to dirt roads with the trailer) so you will need an off-road trailer – no caravans. There will be side trips to see interesting things that are on rougher tracks. I would hope to be at each camp site at least two nights (so that there is not setting up and packing up every day). It will be almost all bush camping (pit toilets but no other amenities). Probably in a caravan park once a week.

    Email trips@trax.org.au ASAP

        Kowmung, Yerranderie Report 2

        Kowmung, Yerranderie
        Friday 2nd November – Sunday 4th November 2018

It’s not often we get more than one Trip Report, but thanks to The Beatsons for providing another…….
        Friday 2nd November 2018
Our meeting point was at the Boyd River National park camp ground. It was a hot windy afternoon.Four vehicles set up that being Alex, Kylie and Shane, Megan and Neil, and Kristy and Ryan.
Fortunately we got to have dinner before the storm hit. We quickly gathered under Alex’s shelter to watch the display of lightning and thunder. During the downpour Laura and Diane arrived and managed to find us with the help of Neil ushering them in. Steve, Julie, William and Phillip and Linda turned up later again and camped the night in their car. Finally the rain eased but the wind howled all night. This turned out to be a blessing as everything was dry for the morning pack up.
        Saturday 3rd November 2018
We rose early and had a relaxing morning we were able to chat, the children played, and we got to pack up at a comfortable pace. Two additional vehicles joined us at this point. Matt and Will and Chris and Bec. We had two minor hiccups. One, the Beatsons packed the car keys away in the camper and second, the Jones family packed a mobile phone in the tent. Once everything was sorted out Matt gathered the group and prayed before we set off.
With the sun shining we set off to our first point of interest Kanangra Walls. The travelling distance was only 7kms. We parked the cars and walked the easy, flat, ten minute track to the lookout. The view was vast, rugged, sheer and spectacular. We made the picnic hut at Kanangra Walls our morning tea stop.
We hit the tracks again making our way towards Dingo Dell. The terrain along the Morong Creek Fire Trail was pretty and serene as the sunbeams reflected off the tall gums illuminating the forest floor. From here we climbed some steep hills and some interesting descents. The trail also offered a few good water crossings which washed some dust and mud off the 4WD’s. Crossing the Kowmung River was a highlight and the children couldn’t resist swimming in the fresh, clear running water. At this shady place, on the other side of the river, we had lunch. It was also an opportunity to chat about the trip so far and share plans for the rest of the day. It was at this place that Kylie had two scares. First a huntsman spider crawled up her skirt onto her thigh. After that (at a bush toilet spot) she almost trod on a juvenile brown snake. It was definitely time to move on!
The drive from Del Rio to Yerranderie took about an hour and a half making it the longest stretch of driving for the day. We turned onto the old Oberon Stock route. The road was in good condition. However, it was very dusty, had some pot holes and in some sections, it was quite bumpy due to the small, sharp rocks. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant drive and offered some spectacular scenery of the mountains and valleys as we drove across the ridge. Making a brief toilet stop about 28kms before Yerranderie, Neil discovered that the persistent rattling sound on his Patrol was actually a broken muffler. After removing it the convoy continued to our camping destination.
We arrived at the old mining town just in time to set up and have dinner before the sun went down. It had been a big day, so a pleasant quiet evening allowed for some nice conversation and fellowship. Our attention was also captured by the stars shining before a blackened sky displaying God’s glorious handiwork. All campers enjoyed a restful night sleep.
        Sunday 4th November 2018
The morning sun woke us as we casually started to pack up camp before the heat of the day. After a breakfast of cereal, bacon, eggs, pancakes and tea/coffee we attended the group church service led by Matt. We all gave thanks and praise to our great God who provided us with every good thing. Following this we took some time to explore the remains of the mine town. There was an old post office that is now tourist accommodation, a small museum with some rusted relics out on the weathered veranda and other rundown buildings that were once part of a thriving town. The historic town had lots of grass and greenery at the site which housed plenty of wildlife including wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, goannas, bell birds and bower birds. It made a great attraction to us all, especially the children. After our self-guided tour, we returned to our 4WD’s ready to depart. To make our journey back we took the same roads that we came in on.
Mt Werong was our lunch stop on the way back and it was there we met a friendly wallaby carrying a very curious joey. Alex, Steve, Julie and William said their goodbyes to the group to make their journey home. The rest of the group- Matt and Will, Phillip and Linda, Megan and Neil, Laura and Diane and the Beatsons continued on and then stopped near Oberon Correctional Centre to air up and pray to God acknowledging all his provisions over the weekend.
We would like to thank Rob Drummond for his efforts in organising the trip even though he and his family were unable to make it. And to Phillip for taking over leading the weekend and making it a success.

Report written by the Beatson family.

        Kowmung, Yerranderie
        Friday 2nd November – Sunday 4th November 2018

Phillip and I left Cherrybrook at 5.45pm. It was so hot. As we approached Lawson and stopped for dinner it started to rain heavily, windy, thunder and lightning shows. The lightning shows were amazing and scary. We had Subway for dinner and then continued on our way. It took us another 2 hours before we arrived at the campsite. When we arrived, Neil greeted us. Dianne, Laura, Alex, Shane, Kylie and family, Neil and Megan, Steve, Julie and Will, Kristy, Ryan and family were already there. Neil saw our car and spoke to us on CB radio and guided us to the campsite as we didn’t get there until about 10.30pm. Matt and Will, Chris and Becky were arriving at 9.00am on Saturday morning. It was late, so we decided to sleep in the car and I couldn’t sleep straight away I noticed how clear the sky was with lots of stars. I was praying for a lovely day in the morning. We had a good night on the Friday as the rain had stopped but it was very windy. The skies were clear with a ray of stars above. We had breakfast in the morning and packing up our vehicles waiting for Matt and Chris to arrive at the campsite.Leaving the Boyd River camping area heading towards Kanangra Walls about 10.00am. The weather was sunny and a bit windy. Stopped at Kanangra Walls at 10.30am for morning tea. Went on a 15 minute walk to the Kanangra Walls lookout but did not proceed the walk to the Kanangra Falls as it was further on and steep rocky steps. Then we proceeded to cross the Kowmung River and then stopped for lunch. It was then that Kylie encountered a huntsman spider and a brown snake in the bushes.
The continued travelling to reach Yerranderie camping grounds at about 5.15pm when we saw kangaroos in the bushes. The roads to the campsite were windy and uphill and downhill, sharp bends and in some places not so wide. On the way to our campsite Neil and Megan stopped to check out a rattling noise under the car only to find the last section of the exhaust pipe had broken away. So we set up camp and prepared our dinners. Sat around and chatted then headed for a good night sleep. There was a total fire ban so we couldn’t cook marshmallows over the fire. Tomorrow we were planning to look around the campsite as there is plenty to do and see.
Sunday morning we had breakfast and packed up our vehicles. Matt led Sunday bush service in the morning. Then we spent about an hour looking around the Yerranderie’s old buildings and relics, very interesting. We left the campsite at 11.40pm and planned to stop at Mt Werong campsite where we had lunch before heading back home. Stopped near the Correctional centre at Shooters Hill to air up our tyres for our journey home. Matt prayed for a safe trip home and we said our goodbyes. It was a great weekend.

              Participants:
              Ron Owen TRIP LEADER Pajero
              Neil and Megan Kitchener Patrol
              Norman and Olivia Shin Patrol
Shane and Kylie Beatson, Isabel, Olivia, Foel Suzuki
              Hugh and Dagmar Rees LandRover
              Matt and Alison Smith Suzuki
              Phillip and Linda Favaloro Patrol
Dianne and Eric Linney, Laura Rodeo
Kristi and Ryan Jones, Adam, Jacinta, Jocelyn Prado

What a difference a couple of days makes. Read on to find out more. Two vehicles and four people were on Thursday’s recce. We had 9 vehicles and 24 people on the trip. We met across from the vehicle checking station at Bell in a clearing next to the road as there is no unauthorised parked at the checking station. Ron briefed us and prayed for us. We departed and went left onto the Darling Causeway. A short distance later we turned right onto Hartley Vale Road anddown into Hartley Vale. On the recce we were stopped by a road crew and now the side of the road was nice and tidy. I received a few comments as we passed the reserve on the left. My patrol had noisy fan belt on the CMS Summer School trip after going through come mud puddles. Ron stopped at Comet Inn and commented it was named after a brand of kerosene which was produced from shale in the area. The local school was now a residence. We exited onto the Great Western Highway after the brief historical drive.
Ascended to Mt Victoria over the old convict built bridge turned left at top of pass and travelled to Mt York. On the way, we stopped at the convict dug wells and went down to take in the views. At Mt York we viewed the obelisk and took in views of the western plains. The historic markers include memorials and dedications to the first Europeans to build roads and explore the region. On the recce Ron and I walked remnants of Cox’s Road. we went down a few 100 metres to where some people were abseiling. Today I was happy to talk and have morning tea while others explored the area and its rich history.
Exit Mt York to the Great Western Highway, turned right at the junction and descended Mt Victoria to valley floor and turned left to Little Hartley Village. You can visit the historical buildings for $6 a head plus GST but no one went exploring. Took a group photo outside the court house. In the tourist information office Eric, Phillip, Laura, Dianne and Linda explored the various art works and checked out the walls. National Parks had exposed the original layer. We were also interested in the arches, flooring and the doors. The building used to be the local pub.
We departed Little Hartley and turned right back onto the Great Western HWY and travelled back towards Mt Victoria turning left into Middle Hartley Rd. We continued and followed the back door into Lithgow. Not far ahead we come to a sign regarding rock slides and shortly after made a sharp left hand turn onto a gravel road to Hassan Walls. This was another lookout with magnificent views and our lunch spot. We all went to check out the view. I noticed the Section to the Great Western HWY was now complete. Laura was climbing all over the rock and took some great pictures. It was now lunch time and the wind picked up. At this time, I should mention there was a total fire ban and I got to test my new seats. Check them out at www.muputrax.com.au . There was even a drone in the air.
After lunch we travelled down into Lithgow and stopped at Queen Elizabeth Park for a bathroom stop. From here Ron lead us to Atkinson Road and onto State Mine Gully Road. We turned left at Bungleboori onto Black Fellows Hand Track (now known as Hands Trail). After a short turned into Sunnyside Road. The end of the road was 14/15km not the 4/5km advertised and this is where the fun started. The road out of Lithgow was corrugated and full of pot holes. Sunnyside Road had the addition of mud holes. On the recce, I decided to use 4WD as I was not sure of a couple of puddles plus there was a little downhill section before the lookout. At the lookout we took in the views but on the day, it was blowing a gale and we all stayed away for the edge. I should mention two things. One, on the recce Ron tested out the 4WD in his Pajero on the little uphill. Two, on the day Laura crawled over the bonnet to lock the Rodeo’s hub after coming to a stop in one of the puddles. Reminded me of Bulahdelah, when Matt had people crawling over his vehicle for a winching.
Hugh had a flat at the lookout and so it was all hands on deck to change the tyre. Neil took a few PSI out of his tyre to provide better tracking. On the way back, Shane’s father’s Suzuki developed a noise and he stopped near the Spanish Steps track to investigate. Nothing was really obvious.
Back at Bungleboori Shane checked again and found a broken stabiliser and removed the offending piece. A couple of vehicles had started to head home and we found that Ron had a flat tyre. They returned to help. It was a combined effort and we had him back on the road. It was now about 7pm when I lead off but missed the Old Bells Line of Road turn in the dark and fund myself and others back in Lithgow. Matt made the turn. A couple of us went to the Workers and another group when to Maccas for tea. Linda and I ended up getting home about 10:30pm.
              What a trip!
