TRAX Trip – Meryla SF – looking for a WW2 plane wreck

G’day,

This is the postponed February trip and hopefully recced on the 18th March. I was looking at doing a trip down south and found there is a WW2 plane wreck in Meryla State Forest. So this trip will be a reconnaissance trip to find the wreck and search the area for some good tracks.
A recce means nothing is planned. I have only done an internet search and advise you to do your own research and look at some maps.

Trip Leader:- Phillip Favaloro  email trips@trax.org.au  or Phone 9875 2159
Grade not sure, hopefully moderate

An  email will be sent to those attending with meeting time and location.

You will need a full tank of fuel, UHF radio (Channel 13), recovery equipment (hopefully you will not need it), food and camera – pictures needed for TRAXION.

See you on the tracks

Clean Up Australia Day 2017 – Saturday 4th March 2017

    Clean Up Australia Day 2017
    Saturday 4th March 2017

Our trip for clean up Australia day  was very disappointing  as  the only people to participate were Greg and  Grace. I spent at least  4 or 5 hours of my time organising, for what reason, particularly when  we got no support. TRAX should hang its head in shame,  although we managed to collect 5 bags of rubbish  and 6 of bags  recyclable items, this was despite the rain on the day,  which  really was not that bad . One thing we did notice, a lot of tracks have had gates put in to stop  people gaining access to dump their rubbish. We also had an “authorised vehicle sign” at the start of one of the intended tracks to clean which was only to be used by fire fighters  so that had us looking at other tracks  but all in all it was  a satisfying trip.

    Greg (Car54)

    TRAX Fax version
Although the weather was just a bit wet it did not stop Greg and Grace from venturing out and collecting bags of rubbish. It was such a shame not to see more TRAX members attending the day. After all, TRAX is always spruiking how we look after the bush by picking up rubbish when on TRAX trips. Makes me wonder why such a poor response to this important day . On a brighter note, the high tea I had arranged for all participants as a thank you for helping clean up on the day I just had to eat it all myself!

          CMS Summer School 2017, 10th Jan 2017

          CMS Summer School 2017.
          Tuesday, 10 Jan 2017.

The annual CMS Summer School trip was to the Lithgow Small Arms Museum. I met Matt and Will at Narrow Neck lookout and we met our Mudgee friends at the museum. Eric was already inside looking around; while Dianne was waiting for us outside. The factory was used for more than making guns. They made parts for golf clubs, Singer sewing machines, sheep shearing handsets, hand cuffs, medical implants and a couple of other things that escape me for now. One floor is dedicated to pistols and the other has riffles. At one end of the floor is the SMLE ‘rising sun’ display. From here we went to Queen Elizabeth park for lunch and took in the views at Hassans Walls and Bracey Lookout.

            G’day,

I would like to invite you to our first TRAX 4WD Fellowship trip for 2017.

If you have some holidays or work free days in early January why not come to Katoomba for a day of “Bush and Blessing”? Join other TRAX members for the Annual Day trip in conjunction with the Church Missionary Society Summer School. Come for the whole day (Bible exposition at 9:00, Katoomba Convention grounds) or come at 10:30am for the TRAX trip. Meet at loop Cliff Drive near Narrow Neck Lookout Katoomba (remember 10:30 am, don’t be late). Bring lunch (not BBQ – fire restrictions in mountains) for a easy grade short trip with great photographic views. Return to Katoomba by 6:00pm for the evening meeting or straight home if you need to. Contact Neil Flower for this one neilflower@bigpond.com before 27th Dec. or on 0408 216 401 after that time. (Bookings absolutely necessary).

This year we are going to Lithgow Small Arms Factory Museum and some surrounding lookouts.

“This museum located on the original Small Arms Factory site houses a fascinating collection that showcases the industrial heritage of our nation, and the finest firearms display in the Southern Hemisphere. You may be surprised to recognise some of the diverse array of commercial items manufactured by the factory during the lean times.” from http://www.lithgowsafmuseum.org.au/

You will need a full tank of fuel. Recovery equipment (well you should always be prepared). Food – morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Camera – pictures needed for TRAXION.

              Saturday 26th November.

It was a great day! Sun: not too hot, just right. 24 people, plenty of really delicious food, plenty of water for the kayaks (the whole of Lake Munmorah actually), a great deal of meeting up with some of the ‘old’ TRAX members and some very satisfying relaxation with like-minded friends. Well worth the trip to get there and the effort put into it. No need to say more!

              Ducks on Lake Alexandra

              Jellore State Forest Trip
              12th November 2016
A special report prepared for us by some of our youngest TRAX members….

We started our day at Alexandra Lake at Mittagong and met up with the group there. We had never been there before so we were excited to see how big the lake was. We saw six cute ducklings with their mum and dad. In the lake we saw some big fish too.
After Laurie prayed we all set off. The first point of interest was the monument of the Fitzroy Iron works. We discovered that the Fitzroy Iron Works was the first Iron works in Australia and was named after Governor Fitzroy. Iron ore, limestone and coal were mined in this area. The scenery was pretty and green as we drove towards the forest. We drove past an alpaca farm. We learnt that the male alpaca is called a macho. He is a great defender and is known to protect sheep by scaring off dingoes and foxes.
We stopped for morning tea and shared our homemade cookies with the group. Isabel,
Joel and Olivia had a busy time looking at bull ants and the patterns that formed in the dirt after the recent rain. Then it was time to move on. It was very hot in the car but we enjoyed spotting some interesting things. We saw big termite nests, hollow logs, plants with tiny purple flowers and plants with small white flowers. Along the way we tackled some rough tracks and steep hills. As we looked to the left was saw Jellore Mountain. It was a beautiful sight as it stood out amongst the forest. We found out that Jellore Mountain is a hemisphere in shape.
The convoy of cars came to a sudden stop as a goanna decided to sunbake on the road. What a silly spot to sunbake! However we all got to have a close up look at it and take some photos. The goanna slowly moved off the road when Neil beeped the horn.
We continued to drive through the thick forest and then came to a steep decline. Dad put the car into low gear and we got down with no trouble. We came to a clearing which was to be our lunch stop. We were quick to set up our shade tent, chairs and gas cooker. Other members of the group made an open fire to cook their lunch. We couldn’t believe how hot the day turned out to be. Mum had packed our gumboots and spray jackets thinking it was going to rain but it turned out to be the opposite. While our lunch was nice we didn’t like the swarm of pesty flies. There were thousands of them. Olivia, Joel and Isabel sat in the car trying to escape them.
After lunch dad took us to look at the cliff. It was a beautiful sight looking over the Three Way Valley but it was dangerous too as it was a steep drop below. After lunch we left the forest and drove along Wombeyan Caves Road and came to Bullio Tunnel. As we drove through we could see where the drills had cut into the earth to make the tunnel. Dad tooted the car horn as we drove though it and mum stood on the other side taking photos of us.
As the day came to an end we drove back to Lake Alexandra for a quick play in the park and an easy afternoon tea. The adults stood around talking about how great the day had been. We gave thanks to the Lord for the wonderful day that we had all shared.
Thank-you to Neil and TRAX for organising the day.
We are looking forward to the next TRAX trip.
              Report by:
              Olivia, Joel and Isabel.

And a very big “thank you” to our young reporters: Olivia, Joel and Isabel. We look forward to more of your clear and helpful reports.
