Sand driving Stockton Beach 2017, 23rd September 2017

Sand driving Stockton Beach 2017.
23rd September 2017.

Saturday morning, trundling up the M1 en-route to our rendezvous with TRAX Members and visitors for the annual sand driving and kite flying trip went by smoothly and uneventfully considering it was the first day of the school holidays. Our small group planned to meet at the Metro Service Station on the corner of Lavis Lane and Nelson Bay Road at 9:30 and shortly after Rob, Alec, Laura, Diane, Phillip and Linda welcomed the arrival of our Visitor, Peter Simonds and his two toddlers, Chelsea and Alexis. Peter also announced he had invited a friend of his, a local from Medowie, Peter Middleton and his wife Kerrie who had just arrived too. It’s always great to see visitors on our trips when Peter advised that he was expecting yet another visitor, Michael Davies who arrived soon after. We all purchased our 3 Day Beach Vehicle Permits to Worimi Conservation Lands and moved off to the end of Lavis Lane in order to air down for the beach.
For the first time anyone could remember, there were Rangers at the gate to the Worimi Conservation Lands checking that permits were valid and to give us the once over regarding recovery equipment and if we knew the designated recreational vehicle access areas. At this stage, Michael had to leave us as he had brought along his dog and was therefore excluded from entering the area and this was also against the TRAX Trip by-laws.
It’s always interesting to see the variety of methods and hardware deployed for removing the appropriate amount of air to allow good flotation over the soft sand that was expected. Anything from sticks, automatic deflators, valve removal tools all get the job done, but the easiest appears to be the automatic deflators, as long as they are set up properly in the first place. Once we all completed airing down to 16 to 20 psi, we had a chat about good sand driving techniques and the errors to avoid, then headed off for the fun!
Rob was in the lead and found progress over soft dry sand slower than normal and after building enough momentum, made it to the beach and waited for the remainder of the party to catch up. A radio check announced the beaching of Laura’s Rodeo only 20 metres inside the sand area so Rob turned back to assist Phillip and Laura with the recovery, only to become a victim of the soft, dry sand.
Laura’s recovery was done by trialling the home made TRAXion aids that were made from old milk crates the previous weekend at Neil Flower’s home. Unfortunately they were of limited benefit as tyres don’t have anything substantial enough to grip onto and also, being an open design, get buried in the sand with the weight of the vehicle. However they are better than having nothing at all and with a little shovel work and prudent rocking backwards and forwards, could be quite useful. Laura was on her way but again became bogged and we set her on her way after Rob deployed his TREDs. In the meantime, both Phillip and Rob needed their own recoveries and Rob recovered himself using shovel and right foot and Phillip used shovel and TREDs just to get out of the way to the entrance of the sand area.
Regrouping at the beach, we set off in a southerly direction and stopped near the wreck of the Sygna which is now all but out of view below the very still water. Continuing south, we came to where the sand dunes are larger and set off to have some fun and see if we could get to the top of the largest dune by driving straight up. Rob got to the top, followed by Peter and Peter, and Phillip and Laura eventually made it via alternative routes. After a short time playing dune climbing we set up some shade and enjoyed lunch with expansive views of the beach and ocean in all directions. Kite flying conditions weren’t great as there was only light and flaky breezes but eventually Phillip and Laura got their kites aloft and Rob kicked in late with his stunt kite.
After some more play time, mainly to give Alec a go blasting up a dune or two, we headed north up the beach. With the amount of traffic about, there was very little smooth travelling over the sand as tracks were crisscrossing the beach in all directions. We traversed 12kms and stopped for a photo or two at Tin City and to dream of having such a place available for some peace and quiet (apart from the weekend sightseers!).
The rest of the trip up to Anna Bay was at bit more comfortable along the flatter area left by the outgoing tide. On the way off the beach we saw the inappropriate interpretation of “4WD” when we passed an Audi RS4 beached to the gunwales on the access track. He had plenty of onlookers offering assistance so we continued to a safe area to air up to road pressures before heading off to the café at the Berubi Point Surf Club. We said goodbye to Peter and Kerrie and the rest of us enjoyed a refreshing coffee or milkshake but Laura couldn’t wait to get into the water as it had been four years since she had been swimming at the beach so the boys looked after Alexis and Chelsea as the girls went splashing in the Pacific.

All in all a good day out as we all learnt something about sand driving and recoveries. A big congrats to Laura as it was first attempt at sand driving and she equipped herself very well.

TRAX  “Recce-at-home”, Saturday 9th September 2017

TRAX  “Recce-at-home”
Saturday 9th September 2017.

“Recce-at-home”; Day trip all the way to Hornsby.
Saturday 9th September and 17 hardy souls and 7 (plus ‘Old Lazarus) assorted 4WD vehicles braved the hazards of Sydney traffic to go to the wilds of darkest Hornsby to get to the Flower residence for our “Recce at home” trip.
Those in attendance: Matt Smith (& trusty Disco)
Shane & Kylie Beatson with Olivia, Joel & Isabel (Trusty Pajero)
Pillip & Linda Favaloro (Trusty? Patrol)
Rob & Evelyn Drummond with Lily & Kirra (Patrol)
Greg Paterson (Sometimes (t)rusty Pajero)
Neil & Jane Flower (‘Old Lazarus’ & Disco)
Roger & Judy Riley (Always trusty Defender!)
Sadly, Hugh & dagmar Rees were unable at the last minute to make it because of -traffic problems.
The aim was probably 4 fold, namely;
• To build up a database of trips that TRAX can do in the coming year,
• To learn how to make sand or mud ‘Extraction Tracks’, (that’s tracks, not TRAX by the way),
• To have a good old Aussie BBQ and have a good fellowship meal, and,
• To just have a good relaxing time together.
I think that we achieved all 4 aims!
The afternoon started with (well, after all the latecomers got there!) cutting up old 4WD tyres and abandoned milk crates (legitimately found on the tip or kerbside clean-ups), (We’ll be trying them out at our sand driving trip on the 23rd sept. (See trip report below). Then it was into the ‘eats’ and the BBQ. Oh, and I almost forgot – the Liquorice Allsorts,Chips and Cheezels by the young TRAX-er’s! They were a great favourite.
After dinner it was Video and planning time where we looked at some videos of some 2 – 4 week trips and then a discussion of, and compilation of quite a few 1 & 2 day trips. All these will be looked at by the committee and hopefully put onto the agenda of next year’s trips (and probably the year after’s trips as well.
All in all a pretty good day. See some of the action in the pics. below.

1. Making sand tracks out of old tyres…..
First start with an old 4WD tyre, one as wide as possible, drill a 10mm hole in it just outside of the steel belt area, insert jig saw blade and start cutting. Do this at both sides of the tread, and after about 10 mins you have cut away the sidewalls. Next use the angle grinder with a fine blade and make 1 cut across the tread so as to be able to make it lay flat. Then measure the length that you want it to be (1.4 metres just fits nicely across the back floor of the old Disco). Repeat process with another tyre and, hey presto, you have your sand tracks at almost no expense!

2. Making sand tracks from old milk crates….
Another and very easy (and almost no cost) method of making sand tracks (that even the children can make: See pic at left), is to use the jig saw to cut off 2 sides of old milk crates (obtained legally from the tip or Council ‘clean -ups’). Cut the sides leaving about a 25mm’ turn around’ to give strength (See bottom picture), then wire them loosely together (see top picture). These tracks can then be easily stacked inside or on top of the vehicle ready for use. The beauty of these tracks is that they weigh almost nothing and are easy to clean after use.

Gardens of Stone and Wolgan Valley Rim Track. Saturday August 26 (TRAX Fax)

Gardens of Stone and Wolgan Valley Rim Track. TRAX Fax version Saturday 26th August 2017

Happy birthday Linda

Now that was a great trip! Saturday dawned, Beautiful and sunny, temperature around 7-8 degrees – perfect – if you kept out of the light breeze. We headed up to the Long Swamp Gully track, aired down the tyres and soon came to the Wolgan Valley Rim track where we stopped for morning tea, photos and general ‘getting to know you’ time. We were also able to celebrate Linda Favaloro’s birthday at that beautiful spot!
Heading off from there we began the descent following the watercourse which ultimately finds it’s way into the Wolgan Valley. (Today’s interesting fact: The Wolgan Valley in NSW is part of the larger Capertee Valley which is second only in size to the Grand Canyon in Arizona USA)
But the track was somewhat eroded since the last time we had been along it and one or two sections needed a bit of rebuilding. Thanks to Phillip Favaloro and his famous Polyethylene bags which when filled with sand and dirt really helped to repair a section of track that would have been quite damaging to some vehicles had the repairs not been made.
All got down safely and without even a paint scratch or dent! Thanks to the ‘shovellers’ (both men and women), carry-ers (same), and guiders who worked so hard to make the track navigable.
By the time we reached our designated lunch spot it was well and truly time so, Roger Riley and crew soon had a decent fire going and those who had BBQ’s and other food to cook were soon hard at it.
The afternoon’s run was easy compared to the morning and by 4:30pm we came out at Ben Bullen where we ‘aired up’ again, and after thanksgiving prayers said our farewells and headed off home. Thanks to Matt Smith for a great trip.

Gardens of Stone and Wolgan Valley Rim Track. Saturday 26th August 2017

Happy birthday Linda

On Saturday 26th August we hit the tracks to the Garden of Stone.

The convoy of 11 vehicles started with a casual drive along Wolgan Rd. We turned onto the first fire trail and aired down and then proceeded to the first hill climb. Once at the top we followed the Wolgan rim along to the first lookout. The scenery which stretched over the Wolgan Valley was spectacular. We took the opportunity to have morning tea there and to take a group shot of the vehicles. Joel took his corflue Pajero over the rocks while Will gave his r/c a thrashing over the rough terrain. We then moved on following Disco 1 until we came to a stop.  Everyone decided to check out the point of interest. It was a steep rock descent which was washed out at the bottom with a drop of about one metre. This challenge was not going to stop the TRAX folk so in fine spirits everyone began to build up the road with logs, rocks and sandbags. Although the road was very slippery under foot, the team was very productive and the road was built up in no time. After a group assessment of which line to drive, Matt being the trip leader, was the first to attempt it. Inch by inch, in low range, each car successfully completed the track. By the time the last car reached the end of the rocky decline, about an hour had passed. In contrast 4 motorbike riders who approached us from the opposite direction bounced over the rocks in less than a minute. Their skilful riding made their ride up the hill look simple! We must also add here that some children, those being, Olivia and Joel, loved the thrill and were very excited to be in the Pajero as their dad went down (unlike their mother and sister Isabel who chose to get to the bottom by foot!).

Once down the bottom we came to the rocky outcrops of the Garden of Stone. We felt like dwarfs as the huge stone towers surrounded us. We cruised through the forest till we came to a shallow creek which was to be our lunch stop. It was nice to relax and have fellowship together around the campfire.

The rest of the day was a steady drive through the Garden of Stone National Park. After seeing some other scenic views, we pulled up for a quick afternoon tea and a thanksgiving prayer by Neil Flower. Thank you to all the people who joined us and Matt and family for leading the day.

Olivia, Joel and Isabel

TRAX Driver Training – Sand Driving 2017

Details:
23th September 2017
Sand Driving – Stockton Beach

G’day,

I would like to invite you on our next TRAX 4WD Fellowship trip. This is our annual sand driving event. We are going back to Stockton Beach. The wind-blown sand dunes of Stockton Beach comprise the largest continuous mobile coastal sand mass in the Southern Hemisphere.

Learn all the techniques of sand driving and get over that sand or, brush up on the skills that you have.  It would be good to recover some vehicles by various methods; snatching, traction aids and winching using a spare wheel as anchor. We’ll need a few volunteers to bog their vehicles. Depending on skill level, we may not need volunteers. Debogging techniques will be learnt on a needs basis, unless you volunteer. This will be a great opportunity to try out your new sand track “deboggers” that you made at the Flower’s place two weeks ago.

There may be a theory night, depending on who is attending.

NOTE: There is a cost of $10.00 for a 3 day beach permit.

TRAX trip – October long weekend getaway

          G’day,

Matt is taking us on a trip from Aberdeen to Nundle. We are going the back way and passing through Ellerston, Glenrock Station and Hanging Rock.

(Below information provided for Queen’s Birthday Weekend and may change)

We will meet at Jefferson Park Aberdeen which is on the left as you go through town before you cross the Hunter River. We will meet at 11.00am as some of us are travelling up Saturday morning and there may be traffic due to being a long weekend. We will stay the night at Moonan Flat and if we get charged I believe it will be $8.00 per person but there are hot showers and toilets plus if anyone wants to eat out I believe the pub does good meals. More info on the cost when I hear back from them. Sunday night we will attempt to stay at Sheba Dam, Hanging Rock which is free but depends how busy it is as you can’t book but if we can’t get in there I have a couple of other alternate ideas.

On Monday we will have a look at the historic town of Nundle and travel back by a back road to Scone

Trip Leader:- Matt Smith, Email: president@trax.org.au,  Mobile 0418208926

This is the postponed new year trip. Postponed Queen’s Birthday trip. Third time lucky trip.

            Saturday 22nd July 2017

            Participants:
            Greg & Grace Paterson Pajero.
            Phillip & Linda Favaloro Patrol
Matt & Alison & William Smith Discovery
            Colin & Glenda Flew Ranger
Eric, Dianne & Laura Liney Rodeo
            Neil & Megan Kitchener Patrol
            Alex Ralston Prado
            Steve & Julie Taylor Navarra
            Shane & Joel Beatson Pajero

We met at Queen Elizabeth park Lithgow plus the Lineys at the white bridge on Gerrinween drive. There were nine vehicles and the weather was fine but cold! After all the paperwork Greg gave us a run down and Matt prayed for us. We headed off and I went “Tail end Charlie”. A few of us got stuck at the lights and I waited for the Lineys.
We headed off to catch up with the others. I took a short cut over a mound but Laura did not make it. (Hate that ‘ramp over’). A little push from Eric and Laura was on her way again. We caught up and Greg had deviated from the recce. This route was a tight squeeze for a while but then we were back on track.
At the end of trail was a lookout with views over Marrangaroo NP and Lidsdale State Forest. We went back via the quarry and Shane ‘played’ in a mud puddle. We stopped back at the clearing for morning tea. What a great sight all the vehicles were – lined up side by side.
After morning tea, we headed off to Lidsdale SF. This time, Laura had no problems going back over the hump and there was another hump to get into Lidsdale SF. Tail end Charlie took an easy way into Lidsdale and had to wait.
On the ‘recce’ we were stopped on our first track by some fallen trees. This time, Matt (plus chainsaw) cleared these trees for us. While the clearing was happening Greg and Phillip walked the track and did some pruning. Everyone had to take care as there was a deep rut going down the middle of the track.
At the end, we turned right and we were back on the recce trail. We then turned left. The pines were only a few years old and this better allowed us to take in the views. We were travelling alongside a small creek and black berries were everywhere so some pruning was done to stop the ‘pin striping’. We turned left to cross the creek and Matt had punctured a tyre. It was now 1.30pm and a good time for lunch. The creek was covered in ice which was about 10mm thick. Thick enough to hold some rocks.
After lunch, we headed off for our next challenge. A hill climb. Greg took the easy way while everyone else took the steeper track. The Ranger had a little trouble but made it. At the top, we turned left. Greg found some more hilly sections and the views were magnificent.
On the ‘Recce’, we went down to the Cox’s River. We decided to take a track that would join up with this track but our attempt was stopped by some large rock steps. We were following a fence line and the track was very rough. The track ahead was too rough (those rock steps) but the fence was down and the track continued on the other side but it soon came to a dead end.
We turned around and had afternoon tea at the top of the hill under the power lines. What a windy spot! A few of us checked out a track off to the side. Part of it was too rough but there was another track off this one that looked okay. Greg lead us down and we were on our way out of the forest.
We stopped near the main entrance to Lidsdale SF. Some up us aired up our tyres and Greg gathered us together and we said our goodbyes.
In summary – a great day out. See you on the next trip. – Phillip.
