TRAX Trip – Gee Arm Fire Trail

Details:
5th September
TRAX Trip – Gee Arm Fire Trail

This is a challenging off-road route located in Wheeny Creek, within the Wollemi National Park. It is highly regarded by 4WD enthusiasts for its difficult terrain and remote wilderness views.

Trail Overview
– Location: Gees Arm South Trail, Wheeny Creek, NSW 2758.
– Best For: Serious 4WD driving.
– Difficulty: High B/A. It is specifically recommended for experienced 4×4 drivers
and modified vehicles only. The track feature large bouldery steps, steep hill
climbs, and “chicken tracks” that can still be hazardous. Lots of track building required.
– Admission: All vehicles must have a winch, full recovery gear, no roof top tents or
loads on the roof, 2” lift over standard (Disco’s on high setting) and traction
control/diff locks, lug type tyres, aggressive all terrains (with minimum 70% off road bias)!

4WD Requirements & Safety
This trail is notorious for its technical difficulty and risk of vehicle damage or rollovers.
– Vehicle Specs: A high-clearance 4WD with a lift, suitable off-road tyres, and lockers are strongly recommended. It is not suitable for soft-roaders or top-heavy vehicles due to “sideways action” and proximity to cliff edges.
– Gear: Essential items include recovery gear, tools, and a reliable navigation system.
– Group Travel: Do not travel this trail alone or at night.
– Access: Comleroy Road, Kurrajong Heights.
– Lookout: The track provides access to rugged lookouts overlooking the wilderness, though some drivers find the technical sections so time-consuming they do not reach the end.
– This track is impossible if wet!
The track is 7km long from Comleroy Road and it can take 4 to 5 hours to do the first 5 km, and then the last 2 km I have never been able to climb. So usually it is a full day of technical driving – it is in and out on the same track!

        TRAX Trip – Killingworth Loop

        Details:
        2nd May
        TRAX Trip – Killingworth Loop

        TL-Rob Drummond

Come along for a day of fun and excitement! Located between Freemans Reach and West Wallsend, the track is less than 10km, but it may take all day. It’s not a vehicle breaking day out, but there is plenty of technical driving, and with the help of our spotters, we’ll have a safe and enjoyable day in the bush.

Best suited to a lifted vehicle with traction aids, or newly acquired Discos, you’ll learn about your car as you tackle the tracks. Don’t forget to bring your recovery gear; remember that you need to rely on your gear to get you unstuck.

TRAX Trip – Marulan to Hampton

        TL-Rob Drummond

Come along on this overnight trip following fire trails and some sealed roads between Marulan and Hampton. On both days you can expect easy driving, but some trails will be steep and river crossings may get above your door sills, but the riverbeds are hard and stable.

Enroute, for those with a penchant for antiques you might like to browse ‘Love Vintage Taralga’ and/or grab a coffee and cinnamon donut at The Coffee Palette if we’re early enough (a mobile coffee shop closing at 1pm).

Overnight will be at Silent Creek campground within Abercrombie River NP: https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/camping-and-accommodation/campgrounds/silent-creek-campground/visitor-info

We’ll continue through Kanangra-Boyd NP to Kanangra Walls Road, with a visit to the Walls Lookout if time permits. Afterwards we’ll conclude our trip at the Millionth Acre picnic area on Jenolan Caves Road.

TRAX Training – Trip Leader Practical – Zig Zag

The “Telegraph Line” in the Lithgow area, often referred to as the Telegraph Line Track or Telegraph Road, is a well-known 4WD track located in the Newnes State Forest near Lithgow, NSW. It is commonly used as part of a 4WD trip that links other nearby tracks, such as the Lost City and the Beecroft Trail.

Here are the key details about the track based on search results:

        • Location and Access: The track is located near the Bungleboori picnic area and the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area. It is accessible directly opposite the picnic area, adjacent to the start of the Black Fellows Hand Trail.
        • 4WD Requirement: The track is suitable only for 4WD vehicles.
        • Conditions: The track can be muddy and is part of a “C/C+” grade 4WD route, although some sections can be more difficult due to wear.
        • Route Highlights: It is often paired with trips to “The Lost City,” a, series of stunning pagoda rock formations.
        • Nearby Trails: It is frequently driven in conjunction with the Pipeline Track, Moon Rock, and the Beecroft Trail.

        Safety and Other Notes:

        • Closures: Some tracks in the Lithgow area, such as sections of the Pipeline Track, have experienced closures.
        • Vehicle Preparation: As these are 4WD trails, ensure your vehicle is prepared for rugged, muddy conditions.

TRAX Training – Trip Leader Theory

        Details:
        28th February
TRAX Training – Trip Leader Theory

        28th February 9am to 5pm.

Trax has decided to develop a Trip Leader program to assist aspirant leaders become trip leaders as we need more trips to fill the calendar. Aspirant leaders should have completed previous group trips in a club and had recently completed some theoretical training on how to operate a 4WD vehicle and assist others by spotting. The final part of the training program will be to lead a “mentored trip” under guidance of an experienced trip leader – usually someone from the TRAX committee (more on this below).

Relevant documents will be worked through such as the “Trip Leader Guidelines” and the “Trip Leader Checklist” ,and we will share useful insights regarding trip leader responsibilities, radio etiquette, documentation and challenges, the trip participants register, medical form, the tracks to be driven, convoy order, UHF radio use and pre-trip vehicle inspections, and chaplaincy.

This event will be an inaugural event and from which a leaders course specific to TRAX will be developed.
